“In creating SWON we brought the depth and fun of our earlier air combat projects to then modern day console platforms. In short order we produced engaging gameplay on the PS2 and Xbox, proving that our days focused on PC development did not prevent us from making a mark in console development.”

A trilogy of World War II air combat simulations

Purposefully designed to entertain and enrich players, this series of games chooses immersive fun over ultra-realism in its portrayal of epic air battles of World War II. In the series:

First in a trilogy of World War II air combat simulations, and gave players the chance to fly as an American or Japanese pilot in the Pacific Theater. Named Action Game of the Year by Computer Entertainer. (PC, Amiga, Atari ST 1988, LucasFilm Games) This product was inspired by the deeds and individual heroism of young American and Japanese pilots during WWII.

I am most proud of two things about this product; we based it on real historical events and that we portrayed these key events from the perspective of both sides. giving game players some insight into the courage and humanity of all participants."

Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain

This title recreated the battle between Germany's Luftwaffe and England's Royal Air Force in a series of dogfights for air supremacy over the skies of Britain in the early days of WWII when Germany threatened to invade England. Achieved Action Game of the Year from Computer Gaming World, Hall of Fame from Computer Gaming World and PC Award of Excellence from Game Players. (PC, Amiga, Atari ST 1989, LucasFilm Games)

“Continuing on the tradition and approach of Battlehawks with Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain we really honed our skills and expanded the fidelity and intensity of PC based WWII aerial combat. The replay system stands out as something that I think gamers had a lot of fun with in reliving their exploits. Also it was fun to make a game that was not American centric but focused on the great accomplishments of the pilots of the British RAF and the German Luftwaffe!”

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe

In Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, the third in the trilogy, in which players could choose to fly on either the American or German side. Included Tour of Duty disks for P-38 Lightning, P-80 Shooting Star, He162 Salamander and Do335 Arrow craft. Achieved Best Simulation of the Year from Computer Game Review and Best Pick of 1991 from PC Magazine.

“The culmination of our WWII air combat trilogy was SWOTL, where our design threw in the kitchen sink. It was a massive game that offered literally hundreds of hours of gameplay. I had particular fun making the game’s manual. This was back in the days when a manual could be several hundred pages, spiral bound and a real addition and added weight to the box!” PC, 1991, LucasFilm Games)
